Here is the part two post to Anyone want to guess what I have been up to the last 3 days?
So after deciding our family was not complete without chickens in the
backyard, the kids and I set forth to build a chicken coop. Pinterest
was a huge help in deciding on a design and who knew there were so many
chicken blogs and websites. Love the fact that my boys are getting
older and stronger to help with heavy lifting
Being
a little apprehensive about the whole chicken thing (I am a total city
girl, with a slight phobia of birds) the kids and I thought that 3
pullets would be a good choice to start with. We started construction
the Thursday before Mother's Day and were at the feed store on Mother's
Day picking out our new backyard inhabitants.
I
have to say it has been a few weeks and having chickens is really fun! I
am convinced now that chickens really aren't the smartest creatures but
they definitely are entertaining. We let them out once a day to cruise
the yard looking for bugs and eating weeds. I love the fact that this
time supervising them while they frolic has forced me to take a break
from my sewing machine and enjoy our backyard.
I am
sure there will be more posts on chicken shenanigans to come... could
have filmed an episode of Wild Kingdom in our backyard a few weekends
back when we had a visit from a Redtail Hawk. Mr Hawk tried to make off
with our smallest chicken but thanks to my quick thinking son and a
garden house we were able to rescue little Ming. Just in case you are
wondering... no, people usually don't take chickens to the vet. :0)
Thanks for reading!
